What is Oobuku-cha?
Oobuku-cha (pronounced “oh-boo-koo-cha”) is a traditional custom from Kyoto, passed down through generations. It is a special tea enjoyed at the beginning of the new year, symbolizing a prayer for health and well-being throughout the year. The name Oobuku-cha carries the meaning of "tea that brings great happiness," making it a perfect drink for celebrating new beginnings.
Origin and History
The origins of Oobuku-cha date back to the Heian period (794-1185). During a time when an epidemic was spreading through the city of Kyoto, Kūya, the founder of Rokuharamitsu-ji Temple, served tea with umeboshi (pickled plums) to the people, helping to calm the spread of the disease.
Later, Emperor Murakami (reigned: 946–967), grateful for the monk’s contribution, adopted this special tea as part of his New Year’s ritual. The practice came to be known as "Ohbuku-cha (皇服茶)" meaning "imperial tea."
As the custom spread to the common people, the tea came to be associated with good fortune and prosperity, and the name gradually evolved to Oobuku-cha(大福茶), meaning “tea that brings great happiness”.
Today, it remains a cherished part of Japanese tradition.
