What is Benifuki?
Benifuki is a rare tea cultivar created by crossbreeding the Assam-based variety “Benihomare” with the green tea variety “Makura Cd86.” Compared to other tea cultivars, it contains an exceptionally high amount of beneficial nutrients. It is particularly known for its rich content of methylated catechins, which are believed to have anti-allergic properties, making it a popular choice for those looking for relief from seasonal allergies.
Benefits of Benifuki Tea
- Relief from Seasonal Allergies – Studies suggest that Benifuki may help ease symptoms like nasal congestion, sneezing, and itchy eyes.
- Antioxidant Properties – Like other green teas, Benifuki contains catechins, which support overall health through their antioxidant effects.
- Antibacterial & Antiviral Effects – Similar to regular green tea, Benifuki has properties that may help maintain immune health.
The Power of Methylated Catechins
Methylated catechins help suppress the release of histamine, a key trigger of allergic reactions, making Benifuki tea beneficial for easing symptoms of hay fever and atopic dermatitis. Additionally, compared to other catechins, methylated catechins are absorbed 7 to 8 times more efficiently by the body and remain active for longer. This allows for prolonged anti-allergy benefits, helping to reduce eye and nasal discomfort triggered by allergens such as pollen and dust.
How to Enjoy Benifuki Tea
Although Benifuki is mainly processed into black tea, the oxidation process removes methylated catechins, reducing its anti-allergy benefits. To maximize these effects, it is recommended to drink Benifuki in green tea form. Additionally, as the beneficial compounds are extracted from the tea leaves, using stem tea (kukicha) will not provide the same benefits.
Tips for Brewing and Drinking
- Brew with hot water for maximum effectiveness
- The most effective method is to simmer 2–3g of tea leaves for about 5 minutes. However, this results in a strong, bitter taste.
- A more common approach is to steep the leaves in high-temperature water for about 30 seconds.
- Drink 2–3 times daily for continued benefits
- To support allergy relief, it is best to start drinking Benifuki tea about 1.5 months before pollen season begins.
- If the bitterness is too strong
- Adjust temperature & steeping time:
- Brew at a lower temperature (70–80°C) for 30 seconds to 1 minute to reduce bitterness.
- The second and third brews tend to be milder.
- Try different variations:
- Add honey or black sugar for a touch of sweetness.
- Enhance with lemon or yuzu for a refreshing citrus twist.
- Mix with milk for a mild, latte-like taste.
- Enjoy it cold:
- Brew with cold water for 6–8 hours to create a smoother, less bitter iced tea.
- If brewing hot, dilute with water before chilling.
- Blend with other teas:
- Combine with roasted tea (hojicha) or brown rice tea (genmaicha) for a toasty, mellow flavor.
- Mix with rooibos or jasmine tea—their distinctive aromas help mellow the tea’s astringency.
Extra Tip: Add Ginger for Extra Comfort
If the taste is too strong, try adding a small amount of fresh ginger. Studies suggest that ginger extract may further alleviate discomfort from allergens like pollen and dust mites. Simply mix in a tiny pinch—roughly the amount that fits on the tip of a teaspoon—of grated ginger for a fragrant and soothing tea experience.
